Senior Research Fellow (Directeur de recherche) at CNRS, and Professor of Nepali Civilization in the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilisations, Paris. He specialized in the anthropology of Nepal in 1970 after studying at the Sorbonne and at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris. His work on Nepal has particularly focused on two groups : the Newars of the Kathmandu Valley, and the Tamangs in the west of the country.  He is the author of a dozen books. He wrote on material culture, kinship, politics, economy, religion, and the writing of social anthropology, among other topics. He has extensive experience in the administrative and scientific management of research.

Main positions

- 1970-1971: Cultural Attaché, French Embassy, Kathmandu.
- 1985-1994: Director of the French CNRS research centre UPR 299 “Environment, Society and Culture in the Himalayas”.
- 1985-1996: Associate Editor of L’Homme (the main French anthropological Journal).
- 1990: Convenor of the French-German Conference on Nepal, Arc et Senans, France (in collaboration with Prof. B. Kölver).
- 1993-2005: Chief Editor of “Chemins de l’ethnologie”, a series in social and cultural anthropology, published by CNRS-Éditions and Éditions of the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, Paris.
- 2002-2004: President of the CNRS Committee for Social Anthropology and Sociology of religions (section 38).
- 2002-2006: Member of the Scientific Committee for the French Research Centres in Asia, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Paris.
