Anthony Good: Anthropologists as ‘Country Experts’ in Sri Lankan Asylum Appeals

Friday May 28th, 2010, FMSH (Paris)

This paper explores the role of anthropologists as expert witnesses in British asylum courts. It describes three ‘fact-finding’ visits to Sri Lanka, undertaken with a British immigration lawyer in order to gather up-to-date information on the human rights situation at different stages in the ethnic conflict; discusses some key issues arising in asylum claims by Sri Lankan Tamils; and explains the role of such information in asylum appeals in the British courts.
